You must not know too much, or be too precise or scientific about birds and trees and flowers and water-craft; a certain free margin, and even vagueness - perhaps ignorance, credulity - helps your enjoyment of these things...

~Walt Whitman
Specimen Days, "Birds - And a Caution"

Gopher Tortoise

This pair I first saw from a distance on a hill, when I got closer the one male turtle was flipping the other one down the hill, a very interesting thing to observe.

In Florida the Gopher Tortoise is listed as a species of special concern.

They live in burrows and it is not uncommon to find them sharing their home with snakes, frogs, mice, burrowing owls and many more.

This baby Gopher Tortoise was found by my son when he was 10. He thought he was saving it.

I couldn’t put him back because he could not remember where he found him. So I released him into my back yard amongst the banana trees. It would have been nice if I could have released him close to his home.
