Native Wildflowers in the Landscape: How to Select, Plan & Establish
with Nancy J. Bissett
Course: Learn the characteristics of various Florida native wildflowers including color, seasonality, growth patterns, and how plants will perform in different light, soil, and moisture conditions. Emphasis will be on species that perform well and are available in the trade, with inclusion of some promising underutilized species. Instructor will discuss basic site planning considerations such as grouping, spacing and using bunch grasses for sustainability. Attendees will also learn planting techniques including seeding, watering regimes, and fertilization requirements.

Nancy Bissett  Instructor: Nancy Bissett is a widely respected horticulturist, restoration ecologist, and botanist with The Natives, Inc., a firm established in 1983, offering consulting, ecological restoration, landscape architecture services and a native nursery for a variety of clients including federal and state public agencies, land developers, and private corporations. Bissett has experimented with propagation and cultivation of many native plants including grasses, wildflowers and rare species; and has developed successful upland restoration techniques including site preparation, planting, direct-seeding of native groundcovers, and weed control. Bissett is Vice President of the Association of Florida Native Nurseries (AFNN), a member of several industry and environmental organizations, and a sought-after speaker for horticulture, botanical and restoration conferences.

Maintaining Native Florida Landscapes
with Bill Bissett, ASLA
Course: Instructor will discuss maintenance and aesthetic quality, levels of maintenance and expectations over time, seasonality of landscapes, chemical vs. manual weed control, and recommendations for pruning, trimming, irrigation, fertilization and other maintenance routines associated with native trees, shrubs and groundcover, including wildflowers. Attendees will gain an appreciation of the natural Florida aesthetic, seasonal importance and benefits of ecosystem-based landscaping. Discussion will emphasize working with Mother Nature to save time and money while creating more authentic and sustainable landscapes.

Bill Bissett  Instructor: Registered Landscape Architect, ASLA, native Floridian and founding partner of The Natives, Inc. (1983), Bill Bissett has been instrumental in developing innovative techniques and uses of native plant materials for large scale developers, the Disney Company and Florida Dept. of Transportation. Bissett’s emphasis on environmental function over purely decorative but nonfunctional landscapes has resulted in numerous award-winning and successful institutional, commercial and residential projects. Bissett has developed landscape renovation and maintenance plans and guidebooks including a manual for Florida Friendly School Landscape Projects for Orange County Utilities and the St. Johns River Water Management District.

Using Native Trees and Shrubs to Bring Blooms to the Landscape
with Brightman Logan
Course: Attendees will learn about Florida’s beautiful, blooming and bulletproof native flowering trees and shrubs, including details on seasonal blooming times, natural habitat and suggested landscape uses, soil preferences and water requirements, height and spread, plant growth and habits, wildlife attraction and benefits, and maintenance tips for each species. Instructor will focus on proven performers for the Florida landscape, including popular species that are widely available as well as promising but as yet underutilized trees and shrubs.

Brightman Logan Instructor: A university trained biologist and native Floridian, Brightman Logan started in environmental consulting and later founded his own native nursery (All Native, formerly Central Florida Native Flora) in 1981, providing restoration and ornamental landscape consulting and design services as well as the state’s largest container-grown native nursery. Logan has been an innovator in the introduction of native tree and shrub cultivars and the production of large, landscape quality container-grown natives. He has received national, state and local awards for commercial and residential landscape projects and is a state-registered provider of landscape architect CEUs. An active member of several industry and environmental groups, Logan serves on the board for AFNN and the Florida Wildflower Foundation.
